Every Catastrophe Is A Resource Problem, If You Try Hard Enough

There is a specific type of person — you'll find them on Green Party working groups, usually wearing a fleece — who believes that every disaster in human history was caused by insufficient community consultation. The Iranian Revolution? A communication failure. The Lebanese Civil War? Sectarian tensions that 'could have been resolved with better funding for youth centres'. The fall of every tolerant society that forgot to stay civic? Honestly, probably the buses.

This week, the Green government published its 400-page National Cohesion Strategy, titled 'Britain: One Big Neighbourhood'. The first recommendation is a paella night. The second is a paella night with a British Sign Language interpreter. By page 340, it's paella nights all the way down, interspersed with 'restorative listening circles' and a proposal to replace the word 'extremism' with 'differently-mainstreamed views'.

A Brief History Of Nobody Holding The Pen

Let's do the homework the Greens skipped. Tehran, 1979: a genuinely diverse, cosmopolitan city — women in miniskirts, jazz cafés, a functioning secular legal system — watches a revolution arrive one 'respectful accommodation' at a time. Each concession to the organised, motivated, ideologically certain faction seems reasonable. Each seems like tolerance. Then one morning the cafés are gone, the pen is held by the mullahs, and the tolerant majority discovers that tolerance is not a strategy, it's a resource — and resources get spent.

Beirut, 1975: Lebanon, 'the Switzerland of the Middle East', hands political power to sectarian blocs as 'authentic community representatives'. Fifteen years and 120,000 deaths later, the Switzerland of the Middle East is a memory and the only functioning institutions are the militias. The progressives who'd celebrated the power-sharing as vibrancy wrote their memoirs from Paris.

Britain, 2032: three cities where the council is now openly hostile to women in public life, Pride has been 'postponed for community harmony reasons', and the Green MP's response is a statement celebrating 'the rich tapestry of local democratic expression'.

The 12 Complimentary Meditative Sessions That Preceded The Fall Of Western Civilisation

The Greens' own internal timeline, helpfully leaked, reads like an obituary written by a wellness influencer:

  1. Session One: 'Unpacking our relationship with the concept of borders.'
  2. Session Two: Community listening circle, Oldham. Outcome: 'both sides have valid perspectives on gender segregation, and also on the leisure centre roof.'
  3. Session Three: Interfaith curry evening. Councillor describes it as 'a turning point'. It is not referenced again.
  4. Session Four: The word 'assimilation' is formally retired and replaced with 'joining in, gently'.
  5. Session Five: First council session conducted with a 'parallel community advisory panel'. The panel advises. The council complies. This is now called 'dialogue'.
  6. Session Six: Women-only swimming moved to a smaller pool 'as a courtesy'. The main pool follows 'voluntarily'.
  7. Session Seven: Pride flags removed from town hall 'pending community review'. Still pending.
  8. Session Eight: The Kashmir question comes up. The Green MP declares neutrality 'on historical matters'.
  9. Session Nine: A history teacher is 'reassigned' after describing the Iranian Revolution 'insensitively'.
  10. Session Ten: The paella night. Attendance: 40. Catering: excellent. Cohesion: unchanged.
  11. Session Eleven: The council formally adopts a 'plural legal framework'. Nobody in the room explains what that means. Everybody in the room knows.
  12. Session Twelve: Cancelled. The venue was deemed 'not inclusive' and the organising committee could not agree on who was allowed to organise it.

The Values Problem Wearing A Fleece

Here's the brutal arithmetic the Greens cannot compute: sectarian fragmentation is not a resource-allocation problem. Iran didn't fall because it lacked community centres. Beirut didn't burn because of underfunded youth clubs. Tolerant, open societies collapse when the people who hold the pen stop believing the society is worth defending — and start believing that every accommodation is a kindness, right up until the accommodations run out and only the intolerant are left holding anything.

You voted for sunshine and rainbows. You got a 400-page document whose solution to a civilisational problem is shellfish, saffron and a bouncy castle. The paella, we're told, was lovely. It usually is. It's what comes after the paella that Tehran and Beirut could have warned you about — if anyone in the Green policy unit had read a book that didn't have a mindfulness exercise at the end.
